Let me first give you an outlook of myself. I am a person with more than 17 years of experience in online marketing and SEO, who has been working in different companies, cooperating both in-house and as external advisor in businesses that were mostly focused down to acquisition of organic traffic. Over this 17 years, as I later realized, I’ve been approaching the idea of creating the true school of online marketing and SEO, which I call the True SEO School.
Three questions I was constantly asking myself
I’ve been constantly asking myself three questions.
- What do I actually know (the scope of knowledge)? What is the luggage that I carry? What’s inside of it? I knowledge that I have up to the date. Or you just a rubbish.
- The second question is about the transferability of the knowledge . Can I share the luggage with someone else? Can it be handed over or just for myself?
- And finally, the impact of the knowledge. What can be done to create success out of it?
These are three things that brought me to the idea to create this online school. It is a multidiscipline school.
We are not only focused on SEO, but covering whole bunch of things around online marketing, and is also a community of like-minded individuals that collaborate, exchange ideas.
The school is built around Socratic methods, which is to say a method that allows questioning the premises and bringing in fundamental questions that, later on, yield great results. And the school tends to overcome the chronicle disease of all education that lies in inconsistency of knowledgeand the lack of alignment as a result of it within the organization and business.
What is the biggest problem of SEO education today?
So what I found to be the biggest problem in SEO education today?
- A lack of wider perspective. The education is too narrow, too tech focused.
- Most of the time the knowledge that people get is self contradictory. If you dive deeper, you will find multiple examples of it.
- And finally, things we are taught, things are instrumental mostly, so they’re not creating new knowledge. They’re just “take and do”.
How a knowledge is acquired in SEO?
Let’s think about the question, how knowledge is acquired in SEO or online marketing, virtually in every experimental activity or any scientific activity?
Here in SEO, the search engine or a search engine crew cannot teach youmuch because they don’t actually know what is the customer utility, what exactly customer likes versus not.
The customers themself cannot teach you things because they cannot agree with each other. They cannot transfer the knowledge that they presumably have deep inside.
And finally, the experts or knowledgeable individuals cannot teach youbecause what they give already requires a certain, high level of expertise. So to learn from them, you need to be expert in the first place.
This poses a question of method. How to help a person educate himself because only a learner can educate himself or herself.
A Socratic method
And this question of method I solve with a Socratic method, this is to say, asking about the foundation of knowledge.
- Believing in the idea that thinking is making distinction.
- Telling what is knowledge versus opinion.
- And thinking is making synthesis. This is to say synthesizing and having a wide perspective over the things.
What I see in the SEO education or overall SEO domain today is that we have a pathology of thinking. We are lacking, critical thinking to the highest degree.
Knowledge is very often self contradictory, so everyone that touches upon it may pose himself or has a question:
- Is this even the knowledge or opinion?
- Can I actually attribute this knowledge to a source or can I trace it back to a certain experiment where it was gained.
- Does this knowledge have an exception or fault in it?
- Or does the knowledge find its right scope of functioning? Do we match the knowledge with the scope of operation?
And this emphasizes a necessity of a proper method to acquire knowledge.
Why I think Socratic method is good for that?
Because it creates the ability to acquire knowledge step by step, to trace back things we learned and to recreate the knowledge in itself.
Socratic method is good in internalizing or making knowledge our own. And finally, Socratic method in itself contains a way to verify what we learned and what we think the knowledge is.
For whom is this method?
- In the first place is for people who are active learners, who acquire the knowledge by doing. We’re not just sitting and waiting.
- It is for those who want to bring a clarity and perspective to what they actually already know.
- For those who may want to question the general premises or question the so-called general knowledge.
- And people who want to get to the heart of the matter.
They can be active practitioners, people who wanna be SEOs. People who work in marketing, in product management, the management level, like chief marketing officers and a whole bunch of guys out there.
